How to Commission a Stained Glass Door with Eirlume Studio
Commissioning a stained glass door is an exciting process, a chance to create something unique for your home or business. At Eirlume Studio, we guide you through the process step by step, from initial ideas to final installation. Whether it’s a stained glass front door, ensuite door or internal door, each piece is designed and made bespoke for you.
Here’s what you can expect when commissioning a stained glass door with us.
1. Start with an idea (even a loose one)
You don’t need to come to us with a finished design in mind. Many clients start with one or more of the below:
Reference images they like
An architectural style (traditional, contemporary, Art Deco, Art Nouveau)
Colours they’re drawn to
Or simply a feeling they want the door to create
We’re also often sent images that clients believe are traditional stained glass, when they’re actually leaded-effect or faux stained glass, which is very common. Part of our role is helping you understand what’s possible with real, handcrafted stained glass and how it differs from imitation options.
2. Site details & measurements
Once we’ve had an initial conversation, we’ll need:
Door opening dimensions in cm
Whether the stained glass is for a new door or an existing door
Whether the door is internal or exterior
Photos of the doorway and surrounding space
We then provide a clear quote based on the size and complexity of the design. At Eirlume Studio, all stained glass doors are handmade using traditional techniques, so pricing reflects the time, skill and materials involved.
Once the quote has been approved we require a 50% deposit. This covers the fee for the design, purchasing all the glass and other materials required for the stained glass door. The remaining fee is due prior to installation. We will send you a photo once the door is completed in the studio.
3. Design
Once the deposit has been paid, we start developing a custom design specifically for you. This includes:
Two initial design concepts
Two design iterations are included, so we can fine-tune the design together based on your feedback
Final digital design in colour
Layout and proportions
Glass textures and finishes
If a photo is provided, we can create a digital mock up of the design insitu
4. Making the stained glass panel
Once the design is approved the fun part for us begins, the making of your stained glass door.
Each panel is:
Cut by hand and every piece of glass is grinded to fit perfectly
Foiled or leaded using traditional methods
Soldered, cemented and finished by hand
5. Installation
If installation is included, we’ll arrange a suitable date once the panel is complete and final payment is made. Charlie fits the stained glass into the door unit securely and expertly, ensuring both durability and safety.
6. Timelines & payment plans
Custom stained glass doors typically take several weeks to complete, depending on size and detail.
We also offer flexible payment plans, spread over several months, to make commissioning a bespoke piece more affordable. We offer 3 or 6 month payment plans with a deposit of €500 required to secure the job.
