Stained Glass Meets Garden Design at Bloom Festival

A Little Glow at Bloom with Leonie Cornelius

We were so excited when award-winning garden designer Leonie Cornelius got in touch and asked us to create a custom stained glass panel for her show garden at this year’s Bloom festival.

While on holiday in Italy, Leonie spotted a stunning stained glass window in a little church and knew she wanted to bring that same feel into her garden design. She sent us some photos and asked, “Do you think you could make something like this?” Our answer? Absolutely yes.

The design she had in mind was simple but beautiful, a round, single-colour stained glass flower with twelve petals. At first, we thought we’d go with a light yellow cathedral glass, but then we discovered a piece of muted brown glass in the studio. It matched perfectly with the earthy tones and calm vibe of Leonie’s garden. She loved it!

We set to work on making the stained glass panel in our studio in Leitirm. Each petal was hand cut and we used the grinder to ensure the pieces fit perfectly together. Both Charlie and myself applied the copperfoil and used the Tiffany style technique to solder the pieces together. When ready it was delivered to the Phoenix park for installing by Leonie and her team.

Leonie’s courtyard-style garden was inspired by Mediterranean living, blending soft architectural curves with wild, natural planting. As she says, it was designed as a space to slow down, restore and rediscover pleasure in nature. And from the indoor seating nook, the stained glass flower caught the light just right, adding a lovely subtle glow.

Stained glass isn’t just for church or house windows, it works beautifully in outdoor spaces too. Whether it’s for a BBQ spot, a garden wall or a chill-out corner, it brings in colour and light in the most gorgeous way.
