What to Expect at a Mosaic Workshop with Eirlume Studio

We’re often asked what actually happens at a mosaic workshop at Eirlume Studio, especially by people who are completely new to it. If you’ve been curious about trying mosaic making but aren’t sure what to expect, here’s a little insight into how the day unfolds and what you’ll create with us in our Leitrim studio.

Learn the Basics of Mosaic Making

Our workshops introduce you to the foundations of traditional mosaic techniques, using high-quality ceramic tiles (including Winckelmans tiles) to create your own piece.

Mosaic is all about patience and flow. We’ll guide you through the process step by step, showing you how small individual pieces come together to create something really beautiful and lasting.

Choose Your Design

At the start of the workshop, you’ll choose from a selection of designs. These might include:

  • Simple geometric pattern

  • Butterly

  • Flower

  • Fish

We keep the designs beginner-friendly, but if you have a design in mind you can create your own artwork.

Tools and Materials Provided

Everything you need is provided on the day, so you can just arrive and get started.

You’ll be working with:

  • Ceramic mosaic tiles

  • Tile nippers for cutting shapes

  • Adhesive and plywood panel

  • Grout and finishing materials

We’ll show you how to use each tool safely and confidently, even if it’s your first time.

Step-by-Step Guidance

We begin with a quick introduction and demonstration, then guide you through each stage of the process:

  1. Transferring your design onto your panel

  2. Cutting tiles to shape

  3. Placing and composing your mosaic

  4. Gluing everything into position

There’s plenty of one-to-one help throughout the day, so you’ll never feel stuck.

Understanding Flow and Composition

One of the most important (and satisfying) parts of mosaic is learning how the tiles “flow” around your design.

We’ll show you how to:

  • Create smooth curves using cut tiles

  • Work with spacing and rhythm

This is where your piece really starts to come to life.

Take Your Time, Enjoy the Process

Mosaic making is surprisingly meditative. Many people say they completely switch off while working with the tiles, focusing only on the shapes, colours and placement.

We keep the atmosphere relaxed, with time to chat, step back from everyday life and enjoy the process.

Grouting and Finishing

Once your piece is complete and set, we’ll guide you through the final stage, grouting.

This is when everything comes together:

  • The gaps are filled

  • The surface is cleaned

  • The design becomes defined

It’s always a really satisfying moment seeing the finished piece.

Your Finished Piece

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your own handmade mosaic to take home. Whether it’s for your home, or a gift, it’s something completely unique that you’ve made yourself.

A Day of Creativity

Our mosaic workshops aren’t just about learning a skill, they’re about taking a break from everyday life and doing something creative with your hands.

There’s always a lovely mix of people, some coming alone, others with friends and by the end of the day there’s a real sense of connection in the room.
